ChildNet International - This nonprofit organization's site features a portal to inspiring, positive online projects created to help "make the Internet a great and safe place for children." Includes links to safety advice, related online and offline resources, publications, organizations, and a special section just for children.

Digital Footprints: Online Identity Management and Search in the Age of Transparency - This December 2007 report considers whether and how often people search for information about themselves online and whether they have taken steps to limit that information. Also discusses social networking and online profiles and searching for information about others online. Includes full text of the report and the questionnaire used to generate the report. From the Pew Internet & American Life Project.

GetNetWise - This site's Online Safety Guide covers, by age level and activity type, the online risks children and teenagers face. There is also a directory of online safety resources including filtering products, advice on reporting Internet safety problems, and a guide to children's Web sites. Sponsored by "Internet industry corporations and public interest organizations to help ensure that families have safe, constructive, and educational or entertaining online experiences."

How to Keep Safe in Chat Rooms - This site provides information on the dangers of using unmoderated Internet chat rooms, and aims to "stimulate parents and caregivers to take greater interest in what their children are doing on the net and help them ensure that we all use the net safely." Includes an online chat simulation game, parents' guide, links to good chat room examples, and recommendations for keeping safe in online chat rooms. From Childnet International.

I-Safe America - "I-SAFE America is an Internet Safety Education Foundation with major emphasis on empowering kids/teens with knowledge on how to act responsibly and be safe online." The site includes a description of programs and materials that can be ordered for free to help instruct students, parents, educators, community leaders, and law enforcement nationwide. Features chat rooms and an online magazine for children.

Incredible Inetenet - This annotated directory is designed "to help people of all ages cut through the Internet's clutter and find the Web's best sites to improve their everyday lives." Topics include education, health, technology, entertainment, online safety, and more.

The Kids on the Web - Annotated collection of sites that offer information for and about children. Sections include Fun Stuff, PenPals, Homework Tools, Educational Sites, Things for Adults, Children's Books and Stories, Safety on the Net, and Things for Teens. Maintained by Brendan Kehoe, author of "Zen and the Art of the Internet."

NetSmartz Workshop: Keeping Kids and Teens Safe on the Internet - This site "uses age-appropriate, 3-D activities to teach children how to stay safer on the Internet." Features online and "offline" activities, safety pledges, news, safety tips, and statistics. Topics include social networking sites, passwords, computer viruses, email, file sharing, and more. From the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and National Boys and Girls Clubs of America.

OnGuard Online - This website "provides practical tips from the federal government and the technology industry to help you be on guard against Internet fraud, secure your computer, and protect your personal information." Browse fact sheets and other consumer material about topics such as identity theft, wireless security, spyware, social networking sites, investing online, and laptop security. Also includes video clips and quizzes. In English and Spanish. A partnership of several federal government organizations.

SafeKids.com - A guide for families for "making the Internet and technology fun, safe and productive." Features articles and information on online safety for parents and children, covering topics such as computer security, chat rooms, spyware, cell phones, and more. Includes the "Family Contract for Online Safety."

TRUSTe: Building a Web You Can Believe In - This is another good, concise site about Internet safety and privacy. Web Users has consumer information including tips on using bulletin boards and chat rooms; credit cards and reporting; identity theft, passwords, and cookies; and more. Web Publishers has a model privacy statement, a newsletter with political and legal updates, and information on the "trustmark" which shows that a site conforms to TRUSTe's standard.
