Academy of Achievement - This site depicts the achievements of "extraordinary individuals who have shaped the twentieth century." The role models described are listed in the Gallery of Achievers in the following areas: the arts, business, public service, science & exploration, and sports. The site includes an internal search engine, links to "Steps of Success," and information about scholarships. There are profiles, biographies, and interviews (including audio and video supplements) of more than 80 people. A few examples are: Johnny Cash, Whoopi Goldberg, James Kimsey, Ralph Nader, Rosa Parks, Sylvia Earle, Linus Pauling, Tenley Albright, and Willie Mays.

Biography - Part of the large Infoplease.com site, this boasts over 30,000 biographies of historical and contemporary figures. Search by name or one of the categories (sports, presidents, vice presidents, entertainment, people in the news, business leaders, world leaders, and deaths in the current and previous years). Information varies from minimal to detailed.

Biography.com - Search "over 25,000 of the greatest lives past and present." The profiles range from one paragraph to several. Searchable by name of person only.  Also includes schedules of upcoming episodes on the Biography channel.

Biographical Dictionary - "This dictionary covers more than 28,000 notable men and women who have shaped our world from ancient times to the present day."  Search by name, keyword, and/or date.

Biographical Directory of the United States Congress, 1774-present - Results give birth/death dates, position held, party, state, Congress years.

ColonialHall.com - Contains "103 biographical sketches of America's founding fathers.

Dead People Server - A database of celebrities "who are long dead or newly dead." Browsable by last name, and date of death (1970 to the present). Entries include occupation, and cause of death. Don't miss "Not Dead Yet -- Rumors" to learn who isn't dead. From an enthusiast.

Historic Figures - Brief biographies about more than 300 "movers and shakers of history." From the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

Lives, the biography resource - "The largest guide to posthumous biography sites on the Web."

NameBase Index - Nearly 270,000 citations covering more than 125,000 individual and organizational proper names from approximately 700 investigative books published since 1962 and thousands of periodicals from 1973. Covers academia, high tech, media, political figures, the international intelligence community, U.S. foreign policy, religion, crime, business and more. The Web site is browsable by name or category.

Time Person of the Year: Story Archive - Archive of stories about the Time Person of the Year (previously the Man of the Year) from 1927 to the present. Also includes links to the current year's Person of the Year, a gallery of Person of the Year magazine covers, and a photo history of the Person of the Year. From Time magazine.

Time 100 : Choosing the Century's Most Influential People - A five part series, which covers 100 of this century's most influential people. Profiles of Leaders & Revolutionaries ; Artists & Entertainers ; Builders & Titans ; Scientists & Thinkers ; and Heroes & Icons such as Lenin, Sam Walton, Oprah Winfrey, Picasso, Roosevelt, Aretha Franklin, Stephen Bechtel, Margaret Sanger, Churchill, Sinatra, Walter Reuther, Martin Luther King, Jr., Sigmund Freud, Rosa Parks, Jonas Salk, Muhammad Ali, Rachel Carson, Helen Keller, Harvey Milk, Mother Teresa, and Che Guevera. Uncle Sam: Who's Who in the Federal Government - Browsable list of links provides the official sites for selected elected and appointed officials in the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of the federal government including Cabinet members and administrators of agencies. From the Government Publications Department of the Regional Depository Library at the University of Memphis.

Who2?: Find Famous People Fast - "Classic authors, movie stars, famous frauds, kings and queens, mythical gods, cartoon dogs — anyone famous is fair game for Who2." Each entry includes birth and death dates, birthplace, what the person is best known for, biographical information, and related Web sites. "Who Loops" includes eclectic lists of people who share something in common, such as Death by Car, Celebrity Beekeepers, and Critter Defenders. Browsable and searchable.

Who's Alive and Who's Dead - This site "helps you keep track of which famous people have died and which are still alive!" The purpose is "to list people whose vital status may be unknown by and of interest to the average person," so most persons whose status is well known are not listed. Browsable by field of accomplishment or name. Entries give birth and death (if applicable) dates. Author admits a bias towards his own interests but will consider suggestions.
