About the Foundation:
The Portsmouth Public Library Foundation was created in 1963 as a tax exempt public 501(c)(3) foundation to  raise private dollars to enhance the library system's acquisitions, innovations and special projects beyond the capacity of the normal operating budget provided by tax dollars from the City of Portsmouth and State of Virginia. The Foundation intends to develop an endowment fund to help ensure a perpetual source of funds for enriching the programs of the library system.

Programs funded by the Foundation:
Children’s programs such as Babygarten, Two-Time, regular story times, local history initiatives such as digitizing photographs, old newspaper articles & primary documents are a current focus and grants have provided the materials and supplies for these endeavors. All the Emergent Literacy programs and the annual Summer Reading Program are funded by donations and grants funneled through the Foundation. The McMurran Fund is the depository for the Esther Murdaugh Wilson Room. The Friends of the Portsmouth Public Library, the Students Club, the Lions, the Rotary and the Kiwanis all make contributions for special collections and materials. Book memorials are a popular option to honor a loved one.  The new Churchland Branch furnishings are also a popular designation for donations.

How to make a contribution:
Contributions can be made to the Portsmouth Public Library Foundation in the form of cash, securities, or other assets.  Your donation will be used to enhance library service to the community.  Please click here for the donation form.
