targeted especially for the African American community. Chat or post photos
& videos, search for news about what’s hot in music, fashion, sports and
events or look for the buzz in business, politics and trends.
Entropia Universe - Ages 12 and over. Users can participate in
activities such as hunting, mining, owning land, a store, designing and
selling creations for their avatar, and more. (Download required)
Facebook - Ages 13 to under 18 and in high school or college, or over 18
and agree to their
terms of use. "Facebook is a social utility that connects people
with friends and others who work, study and live around them. People use
Facebook to keep up with friends, upload an unlimited number of photos,
share links and videos, and learn more about the people they meet."
Flickr - Some areas are viewable only to those over 18. Flickr is
a photo sharing site where users can upload their own photos and view photos
from all over the world.
Google Earth - All ages. A model of the planet from satellite
photos that you can add onto such as creating more buildings, through Google
SketchUp. (Download required)
Habbo Hotel - Ages 13 and older. "This busy site uses a hotel
metaphor as its theme complete with a "lobby" gateway and private ‘guest
rooms." (Shockwave plugin required)
How MySpace Works - This introduction to the prominent social
networking site Myspace describes what it "really is, what it can do for
you, [and] how it blew past the competition." Discusses how the idea of
social networking is applied online ("It's the simple act of expanding the
number of people you know by meeting your friends' friends, their friends'
friends and their friends' friends' friends."). Also addresses safety

MySpace - MySpace is a social networking website offering an
interactive, user-submitted network of friends, personal profiles, blogs,
groups, photos, music and videos for teenagers and adults internationally.
River City Project - Grades 6-9. "A Multi-User Virtual Environment
for Learning Scientific Inquiry and 21st Century Skills." Students
work with each other by interviewing and reading documents including
newspapers and photographs to find a cure for a disease that hit this 19th
century town. (Install required)
Second Life - Ages 18 and older. "Second Life is an online, 3D
virtual world imagined and created entirely by its Residents." Single
Basic account is free.

Sustainable Social Networking Directory - Directory of sustainable
social networks whose purpose is to raise public awareness by showcasing the
many thousands of excellent bloggers, companies, inventors, organizations
and websites that are working toward a solution for renewable energy.
Teen Second Life - Ages: 13-17 and adults with approved background
checks. ”A 3D environment created by its users.” Teens can create
environments from scratch using such programs as Photoshop or Gimp, LSL the
scripting language of Second Life, or various other software programs for
making movies or designing objects. Teens can run events and sell their

Virtual MTV - Ages 14 and older. Users can interact with MTV show
stars and create content such as music, movies, and fashion design related
to the show’s characters. (Download required for some of the
programs)
Whyville - Ages: If under 13, must get parent's permission. Games
and activities are education based. Residents can write for the Whyville
Times, get information about nutrition, financial literacy, diseases and
more through engaging activities. (No download required)
Yahoo! Directory of Social Networking Sites - Yahoo! has a long list of
social networking sites. Each site has their own Terms of Use and age
requirements. There is something there for everyone. |
